2009 UCI Senior Career Boot Camp Series:
“Hire UCI Anteaters”

UCI Career Center Director, Kathryn Van Ness

Hire UCI Anteaters graphicIt is a tough economy and, to help UCI graduating seniors in their quest for a first post-college job, UCI Chancellor Michael V. Drake and the UCI Career Center have kicked off the 2009 UCI “Senior Career Boot Camp” series.

Especially designed for UCI seniors, the series was designed to address today’s job market challenges. During the spring quarter, the UCI Career Center is offering over 19 different opportunities including one-on-one career counseling, interview techniques workshops, job search strategies, the Spring Career Fair and network building.

UCI students are well educated and talented; however, they will face a difficult transition to the workplace. All regional and national economic forecasts predict declining job opportunities for college graduates for several years. NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) survey data indicates a 22% decline in hiring for the Class of 2009. The California Development Department forecasts unemployment rates in Southern California to continue upward. The entire State of California is over 10% unemployment.

The UCI Career Center is the sole resource focused on this life changing stage. Career focus, acute awareness of personal strengths, the ability to articulate experiences on paper and in person, flexibility, and heightened awareness of the hidden job market will increase the probability of career success.

Chancellor Drake has sent a letter to over 40,000 alumni asking them to “Hire an Anteater.” Drake invites alumni to recruit outstanding UCI talent and make a significant difference by employing new graduates and referring their professional networks to this special initiative. He is also calling on the corporate and community leaders to work with UCI’s Career Center to help create a customize strategy for recruiting our diverse, talented graduates when hiring. If you or your employer have hiring needs, we invite you to “Hire UCI Anteaters.”
